I beg to forward for your information copy of correspondence which I have had on this subject with Captain Nolloth, the Senior Naval Officer on this division of the China Station.
N° 2.
You will observe from these papers that there is no intention of continuing at present the road in front of the Naval Yard in Stonecutters.
There is no doubt a very desirable work regards the interests of the public generally, but the cost presents an obstacle to the accomplishment of it which for the present appears to be insuperable.
The sea road, or Praya as it is called here, now extends, as shown in the accompanying plan, nearly four miles from East to West along the whole sea front of Victoria, with the exception of about 750 yards in the centre of the line, where the communication is interrupted by Imperial reserves consisting of the Artillery Barracks, the Naval Yard, the Commissarial Stores, the Military Hospital, and the Arsenal.
